A friend of mine works as a cat scan tech and this is a true story shared by him:
ER story
CST: Where is your pain?
Patient: Front of my belly
CST: Ok, is this from a trauma or an accident?
Patient: No, I had gastric bypass surgery recently and I’ve lost 25lbs so far.
CST: That’s good news. It must be tough eating such small amounts since the surgery?
Patient: Yes! Very! That’s why I’m here; McDonald’s had 2 big macs for the price of 1 and I ate both of them. Since then Ive been in severe pain!

When I somersaulted over the handlebars of my mountain bike and suffered a TBI and shoulder separation, I still looked better than most of the staff working a 30 hour shift in the ER. I knew i had to get them laughing.
When the bedraggled attending physician walked in and asked me, “Where does it hurt?” I pulled the bike trail map out of my windbreaker with my one good hand and pointed to the location of my fall. “Right here,” I said.
The room burst out laughing and I got excellent service.

Kudos for keeping your sense of humor in such pain! I had a car accident in 1991 and the EMT’s had a blast with me because I couldn’t help but laugh while they extricated me from the car. It hurt so much I couldn’t help getting giddy over the fact that I kept asking them “What can I do to help you guys?”
It truly makes a difference in all medical situations to have a sense of humor. I hope you have healed well!

Actually, I was so hopped up on adrenaline, I didn’t feel much that day unless I tried to move. The Post-concussion Syndrome was the real bitch but only because it surprised me weeks later.
I refused all treatment but shoulder x-rays and healed perfectly with nothing but a few Advil. As a weightlifter, I was stupendously in tune with my body so I was able to adjust my workouts so that everything healed perfectly with zero PT.
To this day, the only thing I have to show for that afternoon are the x-ray copies and the scratches on my bike. And a bike helmet in seven pieces.

You are amazing! 7 pieces? I’d hate to see what that spot looked like after you were done with it đŸ™‚
It is awesome to hear of your ability to heal so well under your own PT regimen. Keep it up so we all know it’s possible!
