If you are given the opportunity to exact revenge on someone who has messed with your feelings, would you play the game or just let it go?
I have been in this situation a few times in my past and find myself here again. When I played the game, I was trying to make myself feel better about what had been done to me, if it was intentional at the time or not.
Looking back with the knowledge I have now and the memories of those events, I have a greater appreciation and understanding of being the better person and letting go. While the act of messing with someones’ feelings during the revenge stage felt gratifying at the moment, in the long run I hurt someones’ feelings.
I was raised with the golden rule of “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” and “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” If I had reminded myself of these words, I wonder if I would have tried so hard to cause pain and discomfort to them.
I am currently presented with this opportunity once again. This time around, I am giving more effort to letting go and not playing the game because I have realized that if I seek revenge, I am still doing myself an injustice. Not only am I stooping to the level of the one who originally messed with me but I am also continuing to give that person my energy which they do not deserve.
So my dear readers, if you are given the opportunity to exact revenge on someone who has messed with your feelings, would you play the game or just let it go?
